Install Windows 10 as Unraid Virtual Machine

This will guide you through the setup of a Windows 10 machine as an Unraid Virtual Machine.

VM Settings

  • Autostart: No
  • Name: windows10
  • Description: Windows 10
  • CPU Mode: Host Passthrough
  • Logical CPUs: 4/5
  • Internal Memory: 4096
  • Max Memory: 4096
  • Machine: Q35-4.1
  • BIOS: OVMF
  • Hyper-V: Yes
  • USB Controller: 2.0 (EHCI) (I don't have USB 3.0 on current hardware)
  • OS Install ISO: select the Win 10 iso
  • OS Install CDRom Bus: SATA
  • VirtIO Drivers ISO: select the virtio-win iso
  • VirtIO Drivers CDRom Bus: SATA
  • Primary vDisk Location: Auto if on the array, below options for ssd
    • /mnt/disks/samsung_ssd/windows10/vdisk1.img –> This one is vDisk on SSD (Current setup uses this)
    • /dev/disk/by-id/ata-“ID OF DRIVE” –> This one is passthrough
  • Primary vDisk Size: 40G
  • Primary vDisk Type: raw
  • Primary vDisk Bus: VirtIO if on the array, below options for ssd
    • VirtIO –> This one is vDisk on SSD (Current setup uses this)
    • SATA –> This one is passthrough
  • Graphics Card: VNC
  • VNC Video Driver: QXL (best)
  • VNC Password: leave this blank (or set password if concerned folks will get access to unraid!)
  • VNC Keyboard: English-United States
  • Sound Card: none
  • Network MAC: whatever it is
  • Network Bridge: br0
  • USB Devices: none
  • Other PCI Devices: none

Install to Virtual Machine

  • Boot up VM and boot from CD
  • Click on Load driver to be able to see the virtual disk you want to install on
    • Select Browse
    • Expand E drive
    • Expand viostor
    • Expand Win10
    • Select AMD64
    • Select next
  • Select Disk and click next
  • Install will finish then reboot
  • I don't have internet/continue with limited setup
  • Full Name: Dirk Rockface
  • Let install finish
  • Right click on WIN→Device Manager
    • Right click on Microsoft Basic Display Adapter
      • Update Driver
      • Browse
      • Browse
      • Select E drive
      • OK
      • Install
    • Do same for Ethernet controller and the two PCI things
  • click on E drive→guest-agent→qemu-ga-x64
  • change resolution
  • Turn on Remote Desktop in Settings
